The April food security meeting focused on the growing need to access multiple resources to make ends meet each month and the stress this puts on the client, the agency, staff, and volunteers.

"When people are in survival mode, they don’t always know who gives what, when, or how much. They might visit multiple places out of fear — “What if this is the week I get nothing?”

The chaos of poverty makes people hedge their bets.

There is no coordinated intake or shared database, so clients are left to navigate a volunteer-run network of support.

It’s not abuse of the system — it is the system. And it’s failing to meet the scale of need."

Empower with empathy.

Anger can often soften when people feel respected and heard — even if you can’t fix their problem.

“I know it’s so tough right now. If I could give more, I would. We’re doing our best with what we have today.”

Also, ask clients for their input. What would help them feel heard? That invitation alone builds trust.

Decompress after tense moments.

Dealing with stress takes a toll. After a difficult interaction, talk it out with another volunteer. Walk around the block. Vent a little. It’s not weak — it’s healthy.
